Will Smith Pulls Slave Drama ‘Emancipation’ Out Of Georgia In Protest Of Voter Integrity Law

Oh, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Emancipation won’t film in Georgia. Will Smith’s movie is supported by Apple and people in Georgia won’t be able to watch it. Wonder why? This is his way of protesting the new Georgia law on voter integrity. This was the first major Hollywood production to boycott the state over the new law.

Will Smith and film director Antoine Fuqua released a joint statement to confirm the decision. The duo said they couldn’t “in good conscience provide economic support” to the state.

“At this moment in time, the Nation is coming to terms with its history and is attempting to eliminate vestiges of institutional racism to achieve true racial justice. We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access,” they said.

“The new Georgia voting laws are reminiscent of voting impediments that were passed at the end of Reconstruction to prevent many Americans from voting. Regrettably, we feel compelled to move our film production work from Georgia to another state.”

Emancipation shares the story of a runaway slave who goes north to join the Union Army. According to Deadline, the movie will shoot in Louisiana. It’s based on a real story and that’s where the actual event took place.

The production won’t use Georgia’s generous financial incentives. A lot of Hollywood productions have moved to the state in the past ten years just because of these benefits. In 2019, Georgia issued $870 million in tax credits to film and TV making.

Hundreds of blue-collar crew workers in Georgia won’t be able to work now.

Hollywood went full force against Georgia, trashing the new law as racist and a form of “voter suppression.” They say that voter ID requirements will keep away minority voters. ViacomCBS owns CBS and Paramount Pictures. They have criticized the new voter integrity legislation, too.

James Mangold, Mark Hamill, and many others are boycotting the state. Emancipation was the very first major title to renounce Georgia.
