The variant triggered a huge wave of coronavirus infections in the country. This particular variant has a mix of characteristics from both strains located in the United Kingdom and India as reported by VnExpress.
Long says the variant is a version of the variant first found in India with mutations that are common to the UK variant.
Unfortunately, the new variant is highly transmissible through the air. Long explains that viral cultures revealed the variant replicates quickly.
“The Ministry of Health would announce the new coronavirus variant on the global genome map,” Long said, according to VnExpress. Experts have yet to name the variant.
Authorities in India still struggle with the virus. Hospitals are filled with patients and there’s a shortage of medical supplies.
Reuters reported that the South Asian country notes a decrease in cases for the very first time in 45 days. India had 173,790 new infections in the last 24 hours and the death toll went as high as 3,617.
The Indian variant, B.1.617, is the main cause of the wave.
US health officials and Fauci claim that COVID-19 vaccines can ward off the Indian variant.
We don’t know if vaccines will help people fight against the new variant in Vietnam.
