Judge Timothy Walmsley handed down the sentences.
In one pickup car, Gregory McMichael and his son Travis followed the victim on February 23, 2020, saying that he was responsible for an increase in burglaries in the neighborhood. Travis McMichael encountered Arbery in the street and killed him.
When McMichaels pulled over, Bryan pursued them in a separate car and used the phone to record the pursuit and the shooting.
Later, the men were charged with nine counts of murder, malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and false imprisonment linked to the death.
On all charges by a jury, Travis McMichael was guilty, and his father was guilty on all counts except malice murder by a jury.
Travis and Gregory McMichael said that they were trying to arrest him. In the shooting, they said that they were defending themselves.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Arbery’s father, Marcus Arbery, said.
