USA Today reported that Brian Williams, in his first public comments since losing his job apologized for his actions.
“I am sorry,” a subdued Williams told Today’s Matt Lauer in interviews carried out over two days this week. “I am sorry for what happened. I am different as a result, and I expect to be held to a different standard.”
After the six months internal investigation, NBC announced that the veteran newsman wouldn’t be reinstated as the anchor of the Nightly News and, instead, he would be slotted for anchoring breaking news and special reports on NBC’s sister cable network MSNBC.
The network punished Williams for overreacting to his experiences and covered the Iraq War in 2003.
It resulted in his suspension for six months while the investigation took place.
The network state that its “extensive review found that Williams made a number of inaccurate statements about his own role and experiences covering events in the field. The statements in question did not, for the most part, occur on NBC News platforms or in the immediate aftermath of the news events, but rather on late-night programs and during public appearances, usually years after the news events in question.”
MSNBC stated about the anchor’s departure and never mentioned the lies he told.
“After nearly three decades as an award-winning journalist and anchor at MSNBC and NBC News, Brian Williams has informed us he would like to take the coming months to spend time with his family. He will be signing off from The 11th Hour at the end of the year” –MSNBC internal memo.”
