In April 2020, Donald Trump signed an executive order stopping employment-based and extended family-based green card categories. The former President tried to reduce foreign labor market competition against US citizens struggling with joblessness and underemployment as a result of the pandemic.
Two months ago, Trump confirmed his decision and renewed the order. He prioritizes unemployed Americans for US job positions. There were about 18 million unemployed Americans back then. Corporate interests opposed Trump’s order because legal immigration actually helped them boost profit margins while reducing overall wages.
Biden went against Trump and revoked the order. Tech corporations and the US Chamber of Commerce would rather import foreign workers than recruit jobless Americans.
According to Biden, the order “does not advance the interests” of US citizens, because it wouldn’t continue “chain migration.” This process allows newly naturalized citizens to bring an unlimited number of foreign relatives to the US. Biden also supports foreign nationals who arrive in the country through the Diversity Visa Lottery.
The proclamation was going to expire at the end of the next month anyways.

About 17.1 million Americans remain jobless at the moment. Another 6 million are underemployed and would gladly accept a full-time job with competitive wages and benefits.
Of those listed as unemployed, 1.5 million are teenagers, 930,00 are black Americans, 870,000 are Hispanics, 666,600 are Asian Americans, and 576,000 are white Americans. About 3.5 million of the unemployed are permanent job losers.
Trump’s second order expires next month. It halts the arrival of H-1B, H-4, H-2B, L, and J-1 foreign visa workers since June 2020. White House officials confirm they won’t renew Trump’s order.
Biden revoked the order even as the majority of American voters support labor market protections. Rasmussen Reports’ survey found that 73 percent of voters want to see less immigration, more than six-in-10 goes against chain migration, and about 64 percent oppose corporations hiring foreign workers than recruiting jobless Americans, and 63 percent suggest slowing down or even cutting immigrant flow into the US.
Steven Samarota from the Center for Immigration Studies explains that for every one percent increase in the immigrant portion of US workers’ occupation, American’s weekly wages are reduced by 0.5 percent. In other words, native American workers have their weekly wages reduced by 8.75 percent because more than 17 percent of workers are foreigners.
Christoph Albert did peer-reviewed research, acknowledging that “as immigrants accept lower wages, they are preferably chosen by firms and therefore have a higher job finding rates than natives, consistent with evidence found in U.S. data.” According to him, immigration “raises competition” for native Americans.
Every year, 1.2 million legal immigrants receive their green cards and another 1.4 million get temporary visas. Hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens thrive in the country.
