After this move in the second impeachment hearing, the Louisiana Republican Party overwhelmingly censured Cassidy earlier this month.
Yet, on CNN’s “State of the Union”, he maintained that the Republican Party has suffered major defeats under Trump’s leadership:
“We’ve lost the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the presidency in the last four years. Since Herbert Hoover, that hasn’t occurred in a single four-year cycle under a president.”
He went on to say that “campaigns are about winning,” so if Republicans want to win in the future, they must look past Trump.
Cassidy even predicted that if Republicans continue to “idolize” Trump, they will lose in 2022 and 2024:
“You have to talk to people who didn’t vote for us last time if you want to win in 2022 and 2024.
Our policies are now outstanding. We had record jobs for every community before the COVID crisis, including Hispanics, African-Americans, women, the disabled, high school dropouts, veterans, and so on. We had policies in place that were successful. So, if that’s the case, and we’re willing to talk to those policies and those families, we’ll win.”
Cassidy added:
“We will, however, lose if we idolize one guy. And it’s obvious from the last election that this is the case.”
However, in case Trump decided to play in the party’s future, Republicans attending the Conservative Political Action Conference in Florida on Sunday made a strong statement about him.
The former president was overwhelmingly chosen by CPAC attendees as their favored presidential candidate for 2024.
In the CPAC straw poll, Trump got 55 percent of the vote, Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came in second with 21% of the vote, followed by Republican South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem with 4%.
Almost everyone who participated in the straw poll, 97 percent, believed Trump did a decent job as our president.
