Dems say this particular election in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District was actually an early test for the midterms.
Stansbury is an environmental consultant. She was elected to the state House in 2018. Dems praised her science background and her efforts in the area.
However, this election exposes another weak spot. Moores criticized Stansbury for her unwillingness to handle surging crime. He claims Stansbury was unsupportive of law enforcement and campaigned against high crime rates. Albuquerque has seen an increased homicide rate.
Dems have an eight-seat advantage in the House. They will do their best to protect their majority. Several House Democrats will retire or seek other elected offices in 2021. Decennial redistricting will sure favor Republicans. They are dominant in key state legislatures.
Democrats are also facing another challenge. The party of a newly-elected president typically loses ground in midterm elections.
New Mexico’s 1st District includes Albuquerque. Democrats have been controlling it for over a decade. Haaland won the seat three years ago but became head of the Interior Department in March.
