As a part of his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, President Joe Biden has recently included a measure to increase the minimum wage to $15 per hour to help the U.S. economy recover from the pandemic.

However, a new Just the News Poll with Scott Rasmussen showed that most U.S. voters believe by a decisive margin – 51%-29% – that doubling the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour will “lead to fewer jobs being created.”

The survey indicates that this view is adopted by varying margins among men and women and across all racial and ethnic groups, (white, black, Hispanic), age cohorts, income brackets, education levels (college/no college), and residential categories (suburban, urban, rural).

The poll involved 1,200 Registered Voters, and was conducted by Scott Rasmussen using a mixed-mode approach from Feb. 4-6, 2021.

According to Republicans, the $15/hour minimum wage would hinder job creation by almost a 5-1 ratio (72%-15%).

On the other hand, Democrats maintain it would not do so by a relatively narrow plurality (42%-37%).

Apart from Democrats, the only measured groups that do not fear that such a move would have a negative effect on jobs are individuals who describe themselves as either somewhat or very liberal, as well as government employees.

Government employees believe the hike would not mean fewer jobs, but only by the statistically insignificant margin of 42%-40%.
